Dear PCC Board of Trustees,
I have been a proud PCC member since about 1996 and I appreciate my monthly Sound Consumer with its plentiful and pertinent information. I admire and support PCC’s approach to build community, serve members, care for the environment, and provide for its employees with PCC’s childhood nutrition initiative, getting rid of plastic bags, working on reusable produce cartons, and being the first to pledge no sales of genetically engineered fish if it’s approved by the FDA, to name a few.
PCC has become the largest natural foods co-op in the country, and is a model for all other businesses in our community. According to Board of Trustees Elect, Karen May, “Because the PCC community has the audacity to believe environmental stewardship and social responsibility are on par with profit, it is providing a unique kind of leadership.”
With this leadership in mind, I ask you to rethink the use of Wi-Fi in all PCC stores.
According to PCC’s website, “Co-op wide procedures and practices ensure that the human and natural resources essential to our business are protected and respected.” This statement is currently untrue as PCC utilizes Wi-Fi in all of its stores, exposing every employee and customer to microwave radiation.
I spend lengthy periods of time at PCC – checking labels, inspecting fruits and vegetables, ordering freshly juiced greens, carefully packaging bulk items, and dining, etc. Board of Trustees Elect Art Scheunemann wrote in the May issue of Sound Consumer, “Food is a significant investment in our lives…we should have high expectations regarding the ‘return on our food investment.’”
After a breast cancer diagnosis and research into the topic, I have discovered that my near-daily PCC shopping excursions are not providing the expected return on my food investment, since my family is being exposed to dangerous microwave radiation while we shop and dine.
This goes against PCC’s mission to build community, serve members, care for the environment, and provide for its employees. I implore PCC to again be an innovator in your industry and set new standards for the protection of employee and customer health by banning radio frequency microwave radiation emitting Wi-Fi from all PCC stores.
In the book Electromagnetic Fields (356-357), B. Blake Levitt wrote:
“In humans, EMFs in various frequencies have been found to adversely affect calcium binding at the cell surface, DNA synthesis, and cell division; to alter circadian rhythms, affect or alter some important enzyme activities, and affect specific glands like the pineal and the hypothalamus area of the brain, as well as the production of certain neurotransmitters, like serotonin and dopamine; to increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier; to create artificial stress responses; to overstimulate the immune system initially, then suppress and decrease T-lymphocyte production; and to promote malignant tumor growth with particular concentrations in the central nervous system, in the blood and skeletal systems, and in glandular tissue. The eyes, the brain, and the testes seem to be especially prone to abnormal effects from the RF frequencies. The eye serves to amplify some RF/MW frequencies, which is probably why increases in posterior cataracts have been observed in some microwave workers. (Microwaves are also known to increase drug sensitivity in people taking glaucoma medication.) The testes are very close to the body’s surface, which is probably why increases in testicular cancer have been reported in law-enforcement officers who have rested functioning radar guns in their laps.”
We are bathing in electromagnetic radiation on a daily basis now, with Wi-Fi, cell phones, cordless phones, cell phone towers, smart meters, and the like, which, according to the Cellular Phone Task Force can produce such ‘Radio Wave Sickness’ symptoms as:
“Insomnia, headaches, dizziness, nausea, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, irritability, respiratory illness (bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia), flu-like illness, asthma, fatigue, weakness, pressure or pain in the chest, increase in blood pressure, altered pulse rate (usually slowed), pressure behind the eyes, other eye problems, swollen throat, dry lips or mouth, dehydration, sweating, fever, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, tremors, pain in the legs or the soles of the feet, testicular or pelvic pain, joint pain, pains that move around the body, nosebleeds, internal bleeding, hair loss, digestive problems, skin rash, ringing in the ears, impaired sense of smell, pain in the teeth (especially with metallic fillings).”
Dr. David O. Carpenter confirms,
“High frequency EMFs such as the microwaves used in cell phones, smart meters, Wi-Fi and cordless ‘DECT’ phones, appear to be the most damaging when used commonly. Most of their biological effects, including symptoms of electro hypersensitivity, can be seen in the damage done to cellular membranes by the loss of structurally-important calcium ions. Prolonged exposure to these high frequencies may eventually lead to cellular malfunction and death… RF/microwave radiation is also known to decrease the production of melatonin, which protects against cancer, and to promote the growth of existing cancer cells.”
In support of an injunction against Portland Public Schools’ use of Wi-Fi, Dr. Carpenter declared:
“WI-FI deploys pulse-modulated (‘PM’) microwave (‘MW’) radiation (within the larger RF radiation spectrum) with a carrier frequency that is similar to that used by a microwave oven: about 2.45 GHz. This is the ‘Agent’. The 2.45 GHz frequency was chosen for the oven because of its wavelength and harmonic resonance with the water molecule, to ensure the most efficient absorption by living tissues and effective heating by way of the agitation of water at the molecular level. The pulse-modulation of a wave with lower frequencies in addition to the high frequency carrier signal, increases the exposure complexity and in turn the bioeffects in an exposed population.
It is generally accepted within the relevant scientific community and has been established beyond any reasonable doubt that adverse human health effects occur at far lower levels of RF/MW radiation exposure than those that cause noticeable heating, particularly where the
wavelength approaches body-part size and thus maximizes absorption, where the wavelength has resonance with the water molecule, where there is more complex, modulated wave, where there is chronic exposure duration, and where exposed persons lack the capacity voluntarily to remove themselves from radiation sources.
Some effects are shown to occur at several hundred thousand times below the FCC public exposure guidelines, which are set based on the fallacious assumption that there are no
adverse health effects at exposures that do not cause easily measurable heating. FCC guidelines also only apply to 30-minute public exposures; therefore do not even infer safety at durations >30 minutes, such as in a school (or work) setting.”
In their ‘Electromagnetic and Radio frequency Fields Effect on Human Health’ position paper, The American Academy of Environmental Medicine wrote,
“Many in vitro, in vivo and epidemiological studies demonstrate that significant harmful biological effects occur from non-thermal RF exposure and satisfy Hill’s criteria of causality. Genetic damage, reproductive defects, cancer, neurological degeneration and nervous system dysfunction, immune system dysfunction, cognitive effects, protein and peptide damage, kidney damage, and developmental effects have all been reported in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.”
In May 2011, the World Health Organization, International Agency for Research on Cancer classified Radio Frequency electromagnetic fields as a group 2B carcinogen – possibly causing cancer. I don’t believe PCC wants this outcome for their employees or their customers. I urge PCC to make their shopping environment as healthy as the products they provide, and immediately ban the use of health-depleting Wi-Fi in all stores.
I look forward to your reply.
